Repeat Prescriptions
Important changes to the way “repeat prescriptions” are ordered from 01/10/2017
Changes to ordering leaflet - 01/10/2017
The changes outlined in the leaflet and below do not affect Vulnerable or House bound Patients.
The way you order a “repeat prescription” (a medication you can receive regularly without having to see your doctor every time you order it), is about to change.
What is changing?
If medication is ordered on your behalf by your pharmacy, you will now need to order it yourself directly from your GP surgery and your GP will manage the repeat prescription.
Repeat Prescriptions are available only after seeing your doctor and allow prescriptions to be issued without a further appointment being necessary, when a drug is required for a prolonged period. Please note this does not apply to the contraceptive pill where a blood pressure check is necessary every 6-12 months.)
The practice is able to send prescriptions electronically to a Nominated Pharmacy - you can choose a default pharmacy to be your regular choice to collect your medicines from. This speeds up the processing of requests as the pharmacist does not need to collect a paper script from the surgery. Please note that only 1 pharmacy can be nominated at a time, but this service can be useful e.g. over summer holidays, to send prescriptions to a home pharmacy outside Birmingham.
You are able to request prescriptions in person from the receptionists, or by sending a fax or letter. In each case the prescription will be ready for collection the next day.
If you provide us with a SAE we will return the prescription ASAP: this is particularly useful if you are away from Birmingham.
Please try to use the re-order slip (which is printed on the right hand side of the prescription) as this helps ensure system safety and accuracy.
Alternatively you can order online following a simple registration process.
For consistency we try to make most repeat prescriptions last for 2 months treatment.
More information is available on the clinics and services page.
Repeat Prescriptions for vulnerable or housebound patients
We will still have an arrangement with several local pharmacies in Selly Oak, Five Ways and Harborne that enables those of a vulnerable disposition or with a specific need to order repeat prescriptions directly from the pharmacy. In these cases the medication will be available for collection 1-2 working days after the request. This service is free and all you need to do is to take your re-order slip to the pharmacy of your choice and enquire about this service. Please note that if a medication review is due then the pharmacy will not be able to obtain your prescription and they will ask you to book an appointment with your usual doctor.

Medication Reviews
Patients on repeat medication will be asked to see a doctor, nurse practitioner or practice nurse at least once a year to review these regular medications and notification should appear on your repeat slip. lease ensure that you book an appropriate appointment to avoid unnecessary delays to further prescriptions.
